Running your own business means staying in shape, both physically and mentally. Most small business owners thrive on the fast pace and love being busy but in order to do this for any length of time, it’s important to keep in mind that looking after yourself should be your number one priority.
What can you do to ensure your energy levels will remain high and that you’re doing the best you can for yourself?
Be committed to what you are doing. This means your business, your personal life and everything else you do. Decide what your priorities are, work hard at them and most of all, make sure you enjoy them. Dedicate yourself to what you are doing when you are doing it, whether it be your job, your family or relaxing. Focus on the moment instead of the other things that remain to be done.
Focus on your attitude. Remaining positive, even when it seems impossible, automatically helps you to relax. So many of us spend a lot of time worrying about all of the things that can go wrong. Changing our moods and teaching ourselves to turn off the pessimistic thoughts helps to keep our frame of mind positive.
Lower your stress levels by moving around more and getting involved in things outside of yourself. Being physically active in any way we can, either by walking, exercise, whatever works for us, raises our energy and our moods while lowering anxiety and stress. Spending time with others allows us to focus on them instead of ourselves. For those who live alone, a pet is a great idea.
Get up early. Yes, it’s been said before but early risers tend to be more productive and get more done. This is the time of day many of us enjoy the most..we go for walks, have quiet time for ourselves, work in our gardens, write. If you are someone who just can’t get up early, consider changing your schedule around. Can you work nights? Evenings? Working when we’re at our best is what counts.
Plan ahead. Organization is important to a busy life. It’s when we fall behind on things that stress starts to take its toll on our work, our concentration and our ability to accomplish the most. Having a routine can be important. If there are certain things that need to be done every day, grouping them together and finishing them before we start on our work can give us that needed boost to get to the things we tend to put off doing.
Don’t forget to laugh. A sense of humor and being able to laugh at ourselves helps in the most stressful situations…try to look at the funny side of situations that annoy you.
